I want a Mercury Bobcat Villager. You could throw something fun under the hood, strip off the Malaise-Era bumpers and other junk, and turn it into an awesome road trip monster.
Thoughts?

I'm on board. No swaps to EcoBoost or LSX, though - that lacks imagination.

MOAR MERCURY!
MERCURY IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER!
Seriously though, those things are begging for a 5.0 swap. Would be a MONSTER

Well you didn't say he couldn't put a 5.0 in it.

Don't you love that the supercharger is more than half the L of the engine?
2.9L Supercharger on a 5.0L engine lol

Yes. That is it. No question, that is the motor.

There was a guy that showed up to the CT Autocross I used to attend with a brown bobcat hatchback. It was stripped out, with a set of green vinyl buckets, the entire drivetrain from a 3.8 Thunderbird, some sort of pieced-together suspension and a set of used slicks on 10" wide 14" wheels. It was *stupid* fast and surprisingly good around the track. He also seems to be having way too much fun in a vehicle he said he had about $500 in.

I was thinking maybe a a 5.0L like MontegoMan suggested or something weird. Like a BMW V12 or maybe a Porsche 3.6L .

A boxer six is a really interesting idea, but would be tricky to install. Not as tricky as in some other platforms, because the front suspension is very short, but the engine would still be up above that line in the compartment and require fender liner "adjustment". You'd still end up with a low C.G. of course.
The neat thing to try in that case would be a rear transaxle for even better weight distro.

Haha it would be tricky as all get-out but a fun undertaking. I hadn't thought of a rear transaxle idea. That would be awesome!

The "easy" way would probably be with portions of a Porsche 924 or 944.

That guy is my spirit guide. Hadn't considered taking a complete drivetrain from another car but that's a good idea.

Bingo.
